PRODUCTION OF CONTENT

The ‘world of education’ has changed in recent years to bombard the marketing and acceptance of curriculum and blog posts which were/are being put together by technological programs (i.e. from information that machines gather and spit out) instead of by a living person assembling the sentences and lesson material, crafting it as a teacher should do.

When information is produced as a result of robots and computer programming instead of humans, this is known as “generative AI”. The programmed robots get “trained” – they grab and reorganize data from various places and then aim to summarize it. This process is done, often quickly and without any person first thinking through the specific information, organizing the thoughts and expressing it themselves (e.g. in art, in writing, in speaking, etc.).

There is a difference between using computer-assisted tools such as searching online for something, using a spell checker, or an eraser digitally on a graphic, in comparison to, spitting out entire lesson plans devoid of a real person actually designing the lesson itself. (The first is simply using a computer as a tool, even an automated tool to do part of a task, yet still under the control and mind of a person paying attention.)

In our opinion, “generative AI” used in education (sometimes known as “AI-generated work” for “content-creation”) is not just a ‘fast-food’ solution to feed curious minds or check off the “boxes”, not as nutritious as carefully thought-out lessons. A bigger concern is moral: that it is too-often a type of deception (e.g. to appear to be trustworthy and coming from the one place, when in reality, its’ source(s) are from elsewhere and not credited) and/or that it is a form of theft of information/works (e.g. when the material gathered was done so without permission of the owner).

We want our audience to know that the books (including e-books), blog posts, and printables on our website are works which have been produced by a real person (or people). In other words, to the very best of our ability, the content on our website and resources we publish and promote, has always been human generated. (See our “No AI” statement here.)

Copyright, by definition, protects products of human creativity. (Source document link)

He also painted or drew for a number of our book covers.
