The main idea behind this curriculum is to provide an older student with a non-boring copywork that focuses specifically on good penmanship. The element of SURPRISE is key for motivation!
This story has practice for:
- mid-line joining letters (b, o, v, w – these combinations may be in the letter’s passage (e.g. Bb) or in another lesson’s passage)
- capital letters and small letters
- double letters (most letters)
- and the lesson’s letter in various positions in words
Step 1: HIDE this book from all children! Keep each lesson a surprise. Pre-teens and teens will love the suspense and the silliness of the twists in this plot! Even younger children will like to read the story but you don’t want them giving away the storyline to the student who is writing it down for “school”…”

An author’s note about the cursive script used: The script is the closest I could find to resemble the styling I was taught in my Ontario (Canadian) school in the 1980’s. It is similar to a “British continuous cursive style” font and has the traditional lead-in strokes on lower-case beginning letters. The letters tend to be joined together, except a brief break between some capital letters and the next letter of a word. There is a slant towards the right, like in traditional cursive. I am left-handed and this script worked well with my right-handed peers too. (It is a style that I have heard apparently is helpful for dyslexic individuals as well, although I have no experience with that.)
This curriculum is not Bible-based. It is a story about animals in nature at a picnic.
