Canada Map Book 1 (George Quinn, revised by Lindsay Counter) – designed for grades 2-3. The six sections of skilled activities are: Reading a Map, A Map and a Globe, Canada’s Provinces and Territories, Canada’s Regions, Landforms and Water Bodies, and Review.
Canada Map Book 2 (George Quinn, revised) – designed for grades 3-4. Canada and the World: Map Book 3 – designed for grades 4-5. There are 4 general sections: Shapes on a Map (e.g. cross-section, view from above, continents, oceans, early map of the world), Map Symbols (e.g. legends, boundaries, elevation), Direction and Position (e.g. compass rose, Canada West and Canada East, grids, latitude, longitude, early civilizations), and Map Scale (e.g. straight-line and curved-line distances, best route, comparing). THIS WOULD BE A GREAT RESOURCE TO ADD TO A STUDY OF ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS. It has some lessons in world geography.
Canada Through Maps: Map Book 4 – designed for grades 5-6. There are 4 general sections: Shapes on a Map, Map Symbols, Position and Direction, Map Scale. All these sections have similar sub-topics to what is described in Book 3 but are at the next level of understanding/skill. This title has a fair amount of activities and maps focused on our Northern Communities and introduces a topographical map too.
Map Book 5: Exploring Canada’s Geography – designed for grades 6-8. There are 5 sections: What is a Map (e.g. kinds of views), Map Symbols (at a deeper skill level e.g. colour and shading, cartogram, topographical maps), Position and Direction (e.g. grids, latitude, longitude, coordinates, time zones), Map Scale (e.g. comparing distances, including irregular routes and shapes, enlarging a map), and Applying the Knowledge (e.g. relating text to a map and vice versa, urban planning).
